The Story
Caribou Crossing
This delightful book tells a magical story about a Toronto Crossing Guard. He not only carefully crosses all the neighbourhood children at his busy corner, but guides every creature safely through the perils of his intersection. The great friendliness and unwavering integrity that he demonstrates daily gives new meaning to the word hero.
Illustrated in finely detailed watercolours, the story circles through the four seasons. Though it narrates a very urban tale, it is filled with indigenous animals and culminates in a wild, Arctic spectacle apt to induce awe in the reader.
This book is quite suitable for the classroom and is written and illustrated by a primary school teacher. Caribou Crossing is a lovely resource for a unit on Animal Studies, Community Helpers or Environmental Issues.
It is a fine bedtime tale too. The story is uplifting and the pictures are sweet. With a subtle weave of both realism and enchantment it 'enlivens the intellect' and 'gladdens the heart'.
